Finding myself between the closing of one door and the opening of another, it is only natural that I seek out doors not locked to one such as myself. As many an unemployed person would tell you, there is nothing warm or fuzzy about this period.

It is a period where one feels excluded from society at large, like a discard on a refuse heap. It is a period where every scrap of resource becomes a lot more precious in its accentuated finity, its replenishment all but clamped off by those who would toss one aside like gum that has served its purpose. And this from the single perspective… probably far worse for the typical family person in a similar predicament.

Yet where ever one casts one’s eyes one sees little more than hooks baited for exploitative employers. A part time “secretarial” position at little more than Lm1.50/ $4.50 per hour? A little too eager to test the limits of the national minimum wage, no? Or what of the booking clerk/night receptionist position at Lm 1.75/ $5.25 per hour? It seems that others seek to exploit through the placement of multiple tasks. What of the lowly waitering position for which there is just the ominous “wages to be discussed” declaration? Are we not to understand this to mean “cheapest gets it”?

In such an exploitative society, how can the working person ever win?
